| SUCCESS STORY:
Neptune Society Donation
Steve Campbell doesn’t speak and he has a life long cognitive disability – but he had no problems with expressing his sheer joy in getting to ride a new tandem cycle that was recently donated to us by the Neptune Society. That’s Steve in the dark blue shirt riding with his mom, Beth in the photos at right.
Steve had tried cycling over the years with support from his family and Outdoors for All. Yet Steve definitely struggled to find success with pedaling. We learned of an adaptive in-line tandem trike that we thought could be an excellent way for Steve and others to have success with cycling. The Neptune Society learned of our interest in acquiring this new cycle and graciously donated the thousands of dollars necessary for us to purchase this new cycle and add it to our fleet.
Low and behold, Steve and his mom, Beth were both able to try out the cycle and they loved it:
“It was soooooooooooooooo much fun!!! Steve was actually pedaling hard and I think he felt for the first time that he was really riding a bike. It’s great to have him in the front. Thanks for letting us try it out!” Beth Campbell
Interestingly enough, a key vision statement from our Long Range Plan is that “People of all abilities will have access to outdoor recreation whenever and wherever they choose.”
We’re pursuing this goal in a number of ways. This new adaptive cycle, that we’re deploying via our equipment rental program in Seattle’s Magnuson Park, is a great way for us to do so. It’s helping us provide participants like Steve and his mom, Beth the means to exercise their abilities outdoors when they want to, not just when we may have a class scheduled.
A very special thanks to the Neptune Society for making this amazing moment possible (and many moments like this to come). The Neptune Society's generosity will serve our participants for years to come! THANK YOU!
